Kokone keeps nodding off in class, and her dreams are anything but boring. In them she rules Heartland, a kingdom full of machines where thinking computers are outlawed. In real life she is just another high schooler cramming for entrance exams, while Japan gets ready for the Olympics and a car company called Shijima rolls out self-driving technology. Two worlds, one girl, and no clear line between them. Then the dreams start bleeding into her days. Faces she knows show up inside Heartland. Her father, a mechanic with grease under his nails, has been hiding something for years, and whatever it is, it has everything to do with the sleep she cannot control. People want that secret. Some of them come at her through the dreams, and some of them are very real and standing much too close. Kokone has to decide who to trust before the two worlds finish colliding, and she is running out of time to wake up. What exactly is her father protecting her from, and why does a little princess in a machine kingdom know the answer?
