A girl stands at the edge of a hole that goes down farther than anyone has ever mapped, and she jumps. Riko has spent her whole life in the town built around the Abyss, the pit that swallows cave raiders and hands back relics, monsters, and sometimes nothing at all. Her mother went down years ago and never came back. So Riko packs her bag, grabs Reg, a boy with metal arms and no memory of where he came from, and starts climbing down anyway. Then the air changes. The further they drop, the less the rules of the surface seem to matter, and Reg's strange strength turns out to be the only thing keeping them alive. On the second layer they run into Ozen, a White Whistle who has been down there longer than most people have been alive. She is not gentle, and what she tells Riko about her mother is not the story Riko came looking for. Now Riko has a choice she did not expect to make this early: keep going toward a woman she barely knows, or turn back while turning back is still possible. Reg will follow her either way. But what exactly did Ozen mean, and why did she say it like a warning?
