A giant hole opens in the ground on an island in the southern sea, and it does not take long for people to start climbing down into it. Relics, strange creatures, stories of comrades who never came back. A whole city, Orth, grows up around the rim, built on the bones of the divers who went first. Riko is twelve, an orphan in one of its guild dormitories, scraping relics out of the upper layers for pocket money. Then a monster nearly eats her, and something that looks like a boy but is not quite a boy pulls her out of its jaws. Reg. He remembers nothing before that moment. Riko is sure he came from the bottom, and if she can get him back there, maybe she finds her mother too, the White Whistle who vanished down there years ago. So a kid with a beginner's whistle and a robot with no past walk straight into the one place everyone warns them about. The Abyss does not just kill you. It punishes you for climbing back up, and the deeper you go, the worse the price gets. Riko knows the rules. She goes anyway. How far down can two children get before the hole decides it has had enough of them?
