Suzume Iwato is just trying to get to school when she runs into a guy asking about abandoned places nearby. She points him toward a ruin, then follows out of plain curiosity. Inside, a single door stands alone in the wreckage, and beyond it: green hills, still air, a sky full of stars. She can see it. She can't step through. A stone on the ground catches her eye, and when she picks it up, it turns into a cat and bolts. Freaked out, she leaves. And leaves the door open behind her. That night, smoke rises from the ruin. Suzume races back and finds the door flung wide, something churning through it that shouldn't be loose in this world. The same young man, Souta, is there. Together they slam it shut. Problem solved, right? Not even close. More doors are opening across Japan, and whatever pours out of them brings disaster with it. Suzume, who kicked all this off by lifting a stone, now travels with Souta to track down every last one and seal it before the damage spreads. But Souta has his own reasons for hunting these doors, and the cat is still out there somewhere. So what exactly did she set free?
