They keep going down. Riko and Reg push past the third layer, and that's where the Abyss finally takes its fee: the Curse hits Riko for the first time, and it hits hard. Deeper still, in the fourth layer, something called an Orbed Piercer tears into her arm. The wound turns bad fast. Reg can carry her, fight for her, but he can't fix what's spreading through her blood, and for a while it looks like this is how the trip ends. Then a stranger steps out of the dark. Nanachi patches Riko up, saves the arm, saves her life. No catch, right? There's a catch. Nanachi wants something in return, and it isn't money or supplies. She asks Reg to kill Mitty, the one she's been caring for, a companion who cannot die no matter how much she suffers. Reg is a kid with a robot body and a soft heart. Nanachi is offering to join them, to guide them lower than they've ever been. All he has to do is end a life that won't end on its own. So now the question isn't whether they can survive the next layer. It's whether Reg can do this one terrible thing, and what kind of person he becomes if he does.
