Atsuko Chiba spends her days in a lab coat, calm and serious. But slip the DC Mini onto a patient's head and she becomes someone else entirely: Paprika, a red-haired trickster who walks straight into other people's dreams. The device was built to heal. Dive into a troubled mind, find the fear buried at the bottom, pull it into the light. Her colleague Kosaku built the thing, and together they have been testing it on a detective named Konakawa who keeps dreaming the same chase. Then a prototype goes missing. Nobody broke a window, nobody left a note. And people start acting wrong. A colleague laughs at nothing. A parade of household objects marches down a hallway where no parade should be. The line between sleeping and waking gets thin, then thinner. Whoever holds the stolen device can step into any sleeping head and tear the mind apart from the inside, and the government was one signature away from making this technology legal. Atsuko and Kosaku have to find the thief before the dreams spill out for good. The detective, still stuck on his own case, may be the only one who can help. So who is really dreaming whom?
