In the year 2977, nobody on Earth has to lift a finger. Machines handle the work, a constant hum of subliminal messages keeps everyone calm, and the men in charge spend their days on golf courses and at the racetrack. Captain Herlock wants no part of it. He stole a ship called the Arcadia, gathered a crew of people who felt the same itch, and took off to live like pirates instead of pets. Then the Mazone show up. Cloaked women with something wrong underneath the hood, and anyone who gets too curious about them ends up dead. Tadashi Daiba finds that out the hard way when his scientist father tries to warn the government and gets brushed off, then killed. Now the Mazone have Tadashi's name on their list too. With nowhere else to turn, he signs on with Herlock. So the Arcadia sails out to fight an invasion that Earth's leaders would rather pretend isn't happening. Herlock's crew is a mess of misfits, the enemy can look like anyone, and the people they're trying to save don't even care. What does a pirate do when the whole planet would rather sleep through its own destruction?
