Simon spends his days digging. Deep underground, in a village where nobody believes the sky exists, he just breaks rock and keeps his head down. His friend Kamina is the opposite: loud, reckless, convinced that somewhere above them there is a real world worth reaching. Everyone calls him a fool. Then Simon's shovel hits something that hums. The ceiling of the cave comes down. And the thing Simon pulled out of the dirt turns out to be the key to an old machine of war, a face in the rock that wakes up when he climbs inside. With a girl named Yoko who came down from the surface carrying a rifle taller than she is, they push back the monsters attacking the village. When the dust settles, there is a hole in the world above them, and actual sky pouring through it. So they go up. What waits there is worse than anything underground: beastmen in giant machines hunting the last humans, and a mystery that keeps growing the further they walk. Can three people and one borrowed robot really take on all of that?
