Five hundred billion people are trying to get back to Earth. The planet can't hold them, so the Gaia Sanction seals it off and picks who gets in. Herlock commands the fleet that makes that order stick. Then he finds out which names are on the list, and he turns his guns on his own side. He fires on the diplomats, on his own ships, and lets dark matter loose across the surface. The stuff swallows him too. It doesn't kill him. It just stops him from ever dying. A century later he's still out there with one ship, the Arcadia, and a crew that no one official will admit exists. The Gaia Sanction keeps telling everyone Earth is fine, keeps the truth locked away, keeps shipping in the chosen few. Herlock has spent a hundred years getting ready for the last fight he'll ever pick. So when the Arcadia finally moves, who is he really coming for: the government that wrote the list, or the home he burned so nobody else could have it?
