Tetsuro lives on the street, and the reason is simple. His mother was killed for fun by Count Mecha, a machine man who did not need a reason. So Tetsuro has one plan: get a mechanical body, the kind that never dies, and use it to put the Count in the ground. There is a catch. The body costs more than he will ever have, which means the only way off his planet is to steal a boarding pass for the Galaxy Express 999, a train that runs through space and ends its route on a world where the metal bodies are handed out for free. He grabs a pass. Police chase him through the streets, he stumbles, and a woman catches him as he falls. Her name is Maetel, and she looks almost exactly like his mother. When he wakes up, she makes an offer: she will get him on the train, but only if he takes her along. He says yes. Together they board the 999 and the galaxy starts rolling past the windows. Tetsuro wants revenge. Maetel wants something she does not explain. And somewhere down the line, after everything he sees on that train, he may have to decide whether the mechanical body is still what he came for. What is Maetel really after?
