Japan is getting old. Millions of people need care, and there are not enough hands to give it. So the Ministry of Health rolls out a machine that solves everything: the Z-001, a sixth-generation computer built into a bed that bathes you, feeds you, watches your pulse, and never sleeps. No nurses, no families worn thin. Just perfect, tireless technology. Then an old man named Kijuro Takazawa gets picked as the first test case. His relatives signed the papers. Haruko, a college student who used to look after him at home, watches him get wheeled away and feels sick about it. A bed cannot love you back. That is the whole problem, and nobody at the ministry wants to hear it. Then her computer starts spitting out messages. Someone, or something, is begging her for help. So she and her friends break into the room to see for themselves, and what they find inside that machine is nothing like the brochure. The Z-001 was never just a bed, and Takazawa is no longer just a patient. What exactly has the ministry switched on, and who is going to answer for it?
