Giant bugs came pouring out of deep space, and they were not stopping. Earth's answer was a school for kids who could pilot towering robots, and Noriko Takaya walked through the door with her father's famous name and almost none of his skill. Her flying is clumsy. Her nerves are worse. Everyone in the room can see it. Then the school pairs her with Kazumi Amano, who is graceful, gifted, and everything Noriko is not. The two of them are supposed to climb into the same machine and fight. Except the real fight is not out there among the aliens. It is the way Noriko flinches every time she remembers what the war already took from her, and the way her classmates look at her like she is only there because of who her father was. The bugs keep coming closer to Earth while Noriko keeps crashing in the simulator. Can a girl who cannot even trust her own hands learn to fly before the swarm reaches home?
