A boy levels Tokyo with his mind, and the blast sets off World War III. The military locks him away, and for decades nobody hears a word about him. By 2019 the city has crawled back as Neo-Tokyo, a sprawl of bike gangs, bombings, and cops who have lost control of the streets. Kaneda runs a crew called the Capsules, always brawling with the Clowns. During one scrap his best friend Tetsuo gets clipped by a runaway esper, some escaped test subject bolting through traffic. After that, Tetsuo's head starts to hurt. Then things start to move without him touching them. Armed men haul him off to a lab, and the government scrambles to lock him down before he can do what the last psychic did to the city. But Tetsuo isn't interested in being contained. He's chasing a name, Akira, the boy behind the original explosion. Kaneda, a girl named Kei, and a pile of people with their own agendas all get dragged toward the same spot. What exactly is waiting for Tetsuo at the end of that search?
