Shinji Ikari hasn't seen his father in years. Then a letter arrives, and the fourteen year old takes a train to Tokyo-3, expecting maybe a hello. What he gets is a giant machine, a monster bearing down on the city, and Gendou Ikari telling him to climb in and fight. Mom is gone. Dad never once asked how he was doing. Now the man needs him, and only him, because Evangelion Unit-01 will sync with nobody else. The Angels keep coming, one after another, and the military's best weapons do nothing against them. Only NERV's Evangelions can hold the line, and only a handful of teenagers born fourteen years ago can pilot them. Shinji moves in with Misato Katsuragi, a NERV officer twice his age who laughs too loud and leaves beer cans everywhere, and for the first time someone actually seems glad he's alive. It doesn't make the cockpit any easier to sit in. Every battle leaves something behind, and Gendou's reasons for dragging his son back stay buried. The Angels are the simple part. The real fight happens inside Shinji, in the places he doesn't want to look, and the people around him carry their own wounds just as deep. What exactly is his father planning, and what will it cost the boy who keeps climbing into that machine?
