Shinji Ikari wakes up after fourteen years and nothing is where he left it. The planet is a wreck, humanity is barely holding on, and the faces he once trusted stare back at him like he is a threat. Asuka and Mari pull him out of Unit-01 in orbit. Then WILLE takes him prisoner, and the woman giving the orders is Misato, his old guardian, now cold enough to keep him behind bars. Nobody wants to hear his side of anything. Then Rei appears and pulls him out of there, back to NERV. It should feel like coming home. It does not. The place is hollowed out, the war with the Angels has ground on without him, and the only person who talks to him like a human being is Kaworu Nagisa, a boy who seems to know more than he lets on. For a moment Shinji can breathe again. That moment does not last. Because the next fight is already coming, and the enemy is not the Angels anymore. It is the people he grew up with, the ones flying under the same flag he used to. Shinji wanted to fix what he broke. What happens when the only way forward means going through everyone he ever loved?
