Tokyo-3 is all that's left of Japan, a fortress city under constant siege by Angels, giant beings that want humanity gone. Fourteen year old Shinji Ikari hasn't seen his father in three years. Then the phone rings, and Gendou orders him to report to NERV headquarters immediately. No hello. No explanation. Shinji arrives expecting nothing, and gets handed the controls of Evangelion Unit-01, a colossal machine built to fight the Angels. His father runs the whole operation. His new teammate is Rei Ayanami, pilot of Unit-00, a girl he has never met. He says no. He is fourteen. Then he thinks about his father, and says yes anyway. Now every battle could kill him, and the thing he actually wants, one real word from the man who called him here, might never come. So why does he keep climbing into the cockpit?
