A genetic experiment went wrong three hundred years ago, and the forests woke up angry. The trees think, they move, and they decided humanity had to go. What is left of the old world is a few settlements clinging to a shaky truce with the greenery pressing in from all sides. Agito is just a kid fetching water for his village when he gets separated from his friend and finds a machine buried in the woods. Inside sleeps a girl. He wakes her up, brings her home, and suddenly everyone wants a piece of her: Toola, it turns out, is the key her father left behind, and a soldier named Shunack plans to use her to wipe the forest off the face of the planet. She goes with him anyway, against every warning Agito gives her. So Agito does the one thing nobody in his village would dare. He asks the forest itself for power, and it answers. Now he is chasing the girl he woke across a world that wants her for all the wrong reasons. Can he reach her before the weapon fires, or has he already handed the forest its executioner?
