Patema spends her days crawling through dark tunnels her people have spent decades hiding in, and she gets scolded for it every time. Being the leader's daughter does not stop her. A friend vanished down there not long ago, and the question of where he went will not leave her alone. So she slips past the safe borders and into the forbidden zone, where the ground suddenly gives way and she drops into a pit with no bottom. Then the falling starts. Not down. Up. She hurtles toward open sky, saved at the last second by Age, a restless student from the surface nation of Aiga. His teachers say people like her are sinners who get swallowed by the sky, and he never believed a word of it. Now one of those sinners is standing right in front of him, upside down, and everything he was taught starts to crack. The two of them have to keep her hidden while they dig into why their worlds hang in opposite directions and who decided it should stay that way. A quiet girl from below, a boy who asks too many questions, and a truth somebody buried deep. What happens when the sky itself turns out to be the lie?
