A girl falls out of the sky. Right into the arms of Pazu, a boy who works as an engineer's apprentice and spends his free time staring up at the clouds. Sheeta was on an airship when sky pirates attacked it, and she should have hit the ground hard. Instead, the blue crystal hanging around her neck glows and lowers her gently down. That stone is exactly what the pirates were after. Pazu dreams of finding Laputa, a castle said to float somewhere above the clouds. Sheeta's amulet is the key to it, and soon the two of them are running: from the same pirates who tried to grab her, from government agents who want the crystal for themselves, and from an army that shows up wherever the stone goes. Everyone wants the last trace of a civilization that vanished long ago. Pazu and Sheeta have nothing except each other and a direction: up. But if the amulet really can open the way to a flying island, what happens when the wrong people reach it first?
