Fifteen years after civilization collapsed, man-eating monsters roam what's left of Japan, and two survivors are cutting across the ruins in search of a place called Heaven. Maru is young and stubborn. Kiruko acts as his bodyguard, and both of them are dragging around pasts they would rather not talk about. Water is scarce, food is scarcer, and something with too many teeth is always close behind. Meanwhile, behind high walls, children are growing up in a quiet facility. Lessons, games, warm meals, adults who smile and say everything is fine. Then a few of the kids start asking what lies past the fence, and the answers stop making sense. Nobody leaves. Nobody explains why. Two stories, one broken country, and a question hanging over all of it: what exactly is Heaven, and what will Maru and Kiruko find if they actually get there?
