A space battle goes wrong and a sixteen year old lieutenant named Ledo gets flung across the galaxy with his robot, Chamber. He wakes up on Earth. Except Earth is not home anymore. The whole planet is water, and the people who still live there drift in floating towns built from scavenged junk, dragging relics up from the seabed. When the fleet called Gargantia fishes Chamber out of the ocean, Ledo thinks he is under attack. So he slips aboard and grabs a teenage courier named Amy as a hostage. Turns out nobody there wants to hurt him. They are just salvagers, curious about a machine that fell from the sky, and Amy is about as dangerous as a paper cup. Now Ledo is stuck: no way to reach his fleet, no orders, no war to fight. He has spent his whole life in combat, and here he has to learn things like how to talk to people, how to eat with them, how to want something that is not a mission. Chamber keeps calculating odds that do not apply anymore. And the calm does not last. Something about this ocean world does not add up. What is really hiding under all that water?
