Chun turns sixteen and the rules say she has to walk among humans for a while before she can call herself grown. So she becomes a dolphin and slips into a world she has only heard stories about. Then a storm hits. A fishing net tangles around her, and a boy jumps into the water to cut her loose. He drowns instead. She goes home with his face stuck in her head. That is when she finds the Soul Keeper, who offers a trade nobody in their right mind would take: half her lifespan for one dead boy, brought back as a tiny white fish. She says yes. She hides him, feeds him, watches him grow, and tells herself it will be fine. It will not be fine. The seasons in her world start slipping out of place, and something far older and colder than her has noticed what she did. Now she has to choose between the boy she killed and the whole order that keeps both their worlds running. Everyone around her is telling her to stop, and she keeps going anyway, one small stubborn step at a time. How much can one girl owe a stranger before paying it back costs everyone else?
