In 1973, the BETA came down and ate Eurasia alive. Billions dead. Their lasers swat planes out of the sky like flies, so humanity built giant walking suits just to have something that could get close enough to fight back. Thirty years later it is still a losing war of attrition. When the BETA finally hit Japan in 1998, cadet Yui Takamura was sent to hold Kyoto with her classmates. They held it. Most of her friends did not walk away. Three years on, Yui is a lieutenant shipped to Alaska for a joint Japanese-American project to build the next-generation Shiranui. Her partner is Yuuya Bridges, an American test pilot with a chip on his shoulder and something buried that he will not talk about. The rest of the team are eishi from countries the BETA already erased, and the Cold War grudges came along with them. Nobody here agrees on much. Yui just wants to make sure Kyoto never happens again, and Yuuya wants to keep flying without looking back. Two pilots, one machine, a room full of people who don't trust each other. What happens when the test ends and the real fight starts?
