In the 21st century, scientists came up with a cheap plan to warm up Mars: drop some moss and a bunch of cockroaches on the surface. The moss would soak up sunlight, the bugs would breed like crazy, and their corpses would feed the plants. Simple. It worked a little too well. By the year 2577, the first manned ship lands on the Red Planet, and the crew barely gets a message back to Earth before something tears them apart. The thing waiting for them is a humanoid cockroach the size of a man, strong enough to rip through a spacesuit like wet paper. Centuries later, a virus called Alien Engine is killing people on Earth, and the only possible cure sits on Mars. So a hundred men and women get genetically spliced with the traits of Earth's toughest animals, loaded onto the Annex I, and shot toward the planet. They are not colonists this time. They are soldiers sent to wipe out the mutated swarm and take the surface back. What they find up there is faster than them, smarter than them, and it has been evolving alone for five hundred years. The mission turns into a straight fight to stay breathing, and the bugs are not the only thing the crew has to worry about. How do you kill something that learned to survive a planet you could never live on?
