A thousand years ago, something wiped out the solar system. What's left of humanity packed into enormous seed ships and ran, and the Gauna came after them anyway. Nagate Tanikaze knows none of this. He has spent his whole life in the dark lower decks of the Sidonia, alone, sneaking up top just to find something to eat. Then he gets caught. And instead of punishment, he gets handed a pilot's seat, because the boy from the basement turns out to be very, very good at killing things in space. The timing is not a coincidence. The Gauna hit the ship. Giant, mindless, and almost impossible to put down, they tear through everything the pilots throw at them. Nagate flies with Shizuka, Izana, and Yuhata, kids his own age who have trained for this their entire lives, while he is still figuring out which way is up. People die. Ships burn. The Sidonia keeps running because stopping means extinction. So why did the one person who never learned how the world works turn out to be the only one who can defend it?
