Two hundred years after toxic rain wiped the planet clean, people survive underground. In the buried city of Amasia, a kid named Kanata spends every day grinding toward one goal: becoming a drifter, one of the pilots who ride bipedal tanks out into the ruined surface to dig up AO crystals. His friend Tokio is a natural at it. Kanata is not. Then he stumbles onto Noir. An android, a magus, dormant in some forgotten corner of the tunnels, and she boots up on her own, which should not happen. Her memory is gone. She cannot fight, cannot navigate, cannot even explain what she is. Dead weight, basically. Until an Ender attack pins them down and Noir moves like something built for war. Where did that come from, and why can't she remember any of it? Now Kanata has a partner nobody can explain and a map with one blank spot on it: Histoire, the city from his childhood dreams, the one that supposedly holds answers about the world itself. Every drifter who chased it came back with nothing, or didn't come back. So what is Noir really, and what happens when the thing she forgot finally catches up to her?
