Kai moves to a tiny fishing town after his parents split, and he hates it. His grandfather still swears mermaids eat people out by Merfolk Island, and music is basically banned from the dinner table. So Kai just hides in his room, loops beats on his laptop, and posts them online. Then two classmates hear his tracks and drag him into their band. Practice on Merfolk Island goes fine until something surfaces in the water. That night a girl with fins climbs into his room, grins at his speakers, and starts dancing. Her name is Lu. Music gives her legs, water does whatever she wants, and all she really craves is for people to like her. The town's old fear of her kind never went away, though, and Kai is the only one who has seen her up close. Can he get a whole harbor of frightened people to hum the same tune before the tide turns on her?
