Two sisters move to the countryside while their mother stays in the hospital. The house is old, half falling apart, and the woods press right up against the back door. Satsuki is nine and tries to act grown up. Mei is four and does not try at all. One afternoon Mei spots something small and bunny-like in the yard. She follows it. It keeps going, past the tall grass, deeper between the trees. Then the forest gives her something else entirely. A huge, furry creature, bigger than the house, with a round belly and a face that looks half asleep. Mei climbs right onto him like she has known him forever. Satsuki does not believe a word until she sees him too. From then on the girls are in on a secret the grown-ups around them will never notice. The neighbors think they are just two kids causing trouble. The forest knows better. Their father works late, their mother is far away, and the house creaks at night. But the woods are full of gentle, strange creatures, some tiny enough to sit in your palm, some old enough to guard the whole forest. And only children can see them. So who is really looking after Mei and Satsuki when no one else is watching?
