Hinako moves to a small coastal town for college and spends every free hour in the water. Surfing is the one place she feels sure of herself, even if she has no idea what she wants to do with her life. Then a fire breaks out in her apartment building and a young firefighter named Minato pulls her out of the flames. She falls for how steady he is, how much he cares about saving people. He falls for the ocean, and asks her to teach him to surf. Between lessons and long days on the beach, they settle into something warm and easy. Then the sea takes it all back. One surfing accident changes everything, and Hinako is left alone with the future she never bothered to plan. Grief does strange things to her, and so does the water: Minato keeps finding his way back to her in ways that shouldn't be possible. She has to figure out what she's actually meant to do, and whether holding on to him is helping her move or keeping her stuck in place. Can she learn to stand on her own wave, or will she keep waiting for the tide to bring him home?
