Aoyama keeps a notebook. Every day he writes down what he learns, because he plans to be a great man someday. The other fourth graders tease him for it. He doesn't care much. What he cares about is the woman from the dental clinic, the friendly one he calls Big Sister, and she has no idea she's being studied. Then penguins show up. Adelie penguins, wandering the streets of his quiet town out of nowhere, and vanishing just as fast. One day he watches Big Sister toss an empty cola can into the air and it turns into a penguin before it hits the ground. He asks her to help him solve it, and she says yes. Meanwhile his classmate Hamamoto tells him about a huge clear sphere floating in the field past the woods. The kids call it the Sea. Anything that goes in doesn't come back, and only the penguins can break it open. When they do, something terrible comes out. The strange events around town seem to line up with changes in Big Sister herself, and Aoyama starts to wonder what exactly he's been researching all this time. Can he figure out what she is before the summer ends?
