A shortcut through the woods leads a sullen ten year old and her parents to a stone tunnel, and past it, a town with nobody in it. Except the counters are piled with food, still steaming. Her parents dig in, promising to pay when someone shows up. Chihiro wanders off and a boy named Haku grabs her, tells her to run, get out, now. Too late. Dusk drops, the streets fill with noises and shapes, and when she finds her parents again they are grunting on the floor, swollen into pigs. So this is the spirit world, Haku explains, no place for humans. It belongs to a witch called Yubaba, who turns people into animals and keeps only guests and workers. There is one way out for Chihiro: walk up to the witch and ask for a job. Yubaba cannot refuse. A spoiled kid who has never held anything heavier than a school bag now has to scrub bathhouses, bite her tongue, and survive among creatures that would happily eat her, all to win back two pigs who may not even remember they have a daughter. What does a girl who has never done a single thing for herself do when everyone around her has forgotten her name?
