A tiny goldfish slips away from home, riding the back of a jellyfish like it's the most natural thing in the world. Then a glass jar traps her. She washes up on shore, and a five-year-old named Sousuke pries her loose. He lives with his mom Lisa in a house by the sea while his dad Koichi is out on a fishing boat. When the fish licks the cut on his finger, the wound closes. Sousuke gives her a name: Ponyo. Except she already has one. Her father is Fujimoto, a sorcerer who gave up being human to live underwater, and he is tearing the ocean apart looking for his daughter. He drags her back down. Ponyo refuses her old name, refuses the deep, and says she wants to be a person. Sousuke's blood gave her the power to do it. Arms, legs, a girl on the run toward the surface. But magic that big does not stay quiet. The ocean starts to move wrong. The moon drifts out of its orbit. Tides climb higher and higher toward the shore, and something ancient is waiting to test whether a boy and a fish girl are allowed to stay together. His mother watches the water rise. Can Sousuke pass a test he doesn't even understand yet?
