The witch hunts started with the king's blessing. Seventeen years later they still burn, and the real targets are the people quietly keeping the demons out. Makai Knights and Alchemists, sworn to fight Horrors, those things that crawl into souls worn down by grief and take over. The kingdom is killing its own shield and calling it justice. Leon is seventeen and carries the golden armor of Garo, passed down from his mother. She burned for it. He trains with his father German, a Shadow Cutting Knight with a sharp blade and a bad habit of saying nothing useful, and the hatred in the boy hasn't cooled one bit. German knows that. He takes Leon to the capital anyway, where the Horrors are piling up faster than anyone can cut them down. Then there's Alfonso, the king's son. Agreeable, well meaning, and completely outmaneuvered. The royal adviser seizes power while the king lies sick, and Alfonso and his mother get thrown out of their own country. To take it back he needs the Golden Knight. What happens when a banished prince and a boy who despises the crown end up on the same road?
