A world at war with itself. Witches summon demons, the church hunts witches down without mercy, and caught in the middle are the beastfallen: kids born to ordinary parents who come out part animal, part human. Their heads fetch good money on the witch market, so most of them end up as sellswords, hunting the very witches everyone else fears. Then a witch named Zero walks up to one of them and asks him to be her bodyguard. He is a beastfallen, she is the thing his kind gets paid to kill. Her offer: stay by her side, and she will turn him into a real human. She also needs his help finding a stolen book, the only copy in existence that explains a new kind of magic, one that skips summoning demons entirely. Anyone with a scrap of talent could learn it. Now think about who would want that book to stay lost. They pick up a young magician named Albus along the way, chasing rumors and old friends of Zero's across a land that would happily burn all three of them. The mercenary swings a sword for coin and growls at witches, but something softer keeps slipping out around his two companions. So when the book finally turns up, who will he be holding it for: the witch who promised to make him human, or the people who would rather he stay a beast?
