When the sun goes down, the beautiful ones wake up hungry. Water freezes solid around them, and that chill on your skin means you are already dead. Fewer vampires roam these days, mostly because bounty hunters keep cutting them down. Then Charlotte Elbourne vanishes from her family's estate, carried off by Meier Link, a vampire lord with a small army of monsters at his back. Her father wants her back. Alive or dead, he does not much care which, as long as somebody brings her home. So he puts up a fortune, and two very different hunters come running: the Marcus Brothers, who work fast and leave a mess, and D, a dhampir with a sword and a vampire father he never asked for. There is a catch written into the job. If Meier turns Charlotte before they reach her, they are supposed to kill her themselves. The trail runs toward Carmilla's castle, a place nobody has ever walked out of, and someone behind the scenes keeps stacking the deck against every hunter on it. D wants the money. The Marcus Brothers want it more. And somewhere in all this, who is really the hunter and who is the prey?
