What he does not tell you is where they end up: sealed inside a hulking machine built from grief, screaming without a mouth, and there they stay, forever, unless someone cuts them free. Allen Walker was fourteen when he learned this the hard way. Three years of training under a general who drinks too much and vanishes whenever it suits him ended with a letter and a long walk to a place called the Black Order, where priests with strange weapons hunt the dead. Allen's weapon is his own ruined left arm. His eye is worse: it sees the souls trapped inside every Akuma, which means he can never pretend the thing in front of him is just a monster. The Order is not a warm place. There are rules, there are suspicions, and there is the small matter of the Millennium Earl's plan, which involves far more than a few haunted machines. Allen fights anyway, alongside exorcists just as broken as he is. But when the only way to save a soul is to destroy the body holding it, how many can he save before he starts counting the ones he cannot?
