Ken Kaneki just wants to read. He sits in a café with a book, keeps his head down, avoids the news about bodies turning up around Tokyo. His friend Hide talks about ghouls, the ones who look exactly like everyone else, and Kaneki half listens. Then a girl sits nearby reading the same author. Her name is Rize. She asks him out, and for a quiet first year philology student, this is not supposed to happen. Walking her home, the evening turns. Rize is not what she seemed, and what follows puts Kaneki in a hospital with someone else's organs inside him. He wakes up different. Food tastes like nothing. Water is unbearable. Somewhere in the city there are hunters with badges, and somewhere else there are ghouls who eat people, and Kaneki now sits between both sides, unable to belong to either. He hides it from Hide. He learns what his body wants and hates it. The people around him, human and not, all want something from him. So what does a boy do when he is neither hunter nor prey?
