A bored death god drops a notebook into the human world just to see what happens. On a school lawn in Japan, top student Light Yagami picks it up. He reads the rules, takes it home, and writes down a criminal's name as a test. The man dies. Light keeps going. Pretty soon the whole world notices criminals dropping dead, and the internet gives the mystery killer a name: Kira. Interpol brings in L, a detective who has cracked the hardest cases alone. Nobody knows his face, his real name, nothing. L narrows the hunt to Japan, and the two of them start circling each other. Light plays the perfect son, the perfect student. L sits behind a screen and eats nothing but sweets. Both are brilliant. Both are sure they are right. The only way this ends is when one of them finds out who the other really is and strikes first. So who cracks first: the kid with the notebook, or the detective who never shows his face?
