Ken Kaneki stops running from the thing he's become. After weeks in a chair under Jason's care, he walks out of that room with Rize's power humming under his skin, and the first thing he does with it is join Aogiri Tree, the same ghouls who locked him up in the first place. His friends at Anteiku hear the news and don't know what to do with it. Hide can't look at him the same way. Touka just wants to know why. Meanwhile the CCG is done playing nice. Investigators flood the 11th ward, Aogiri answers with teeth, and Anteiku gets caught in the middle of a war it never asked for. Kaneki fights his way through all of it, and every fight costs him a little more of the human part he's been clinging to. Rize's old rule keeps echoing in his head: the strong eat the weak. He finally believes it. That's the scary part. But believing something doesn't answer anything. Why did his body accept Rize's organs when it should have killed him? What is Aogiri actually building toward? What is Yoshimura hiding behind that counter? And what really happened the night Kamishiro died?
