Atsushi gets thrown out of the orphanage with nothing but the clothes on his back. For weeks a tiger had been prowling the place at night, and somehow he was the only one who never saw it. Hungry, homeless, he parks himself by a river and seriously considers robbing the next person who walks by. Then a body floats past. Face down. He jumps in and drags out a man who seems almost annoyed to be saved, because drowning was the whole point. The stranger's name is Osamu Dazai, and he works for an agency of detectives with powers the police can only dream about. Turns out Dazai was hunting the same tiger. The case gets solved, and the answer lands Atsushi in a corner so tight he has no way out except one: sign up with these people. Now he runs odd jobs alongside a crew of coworkers who are all a little strange and very dangerous, handling the cases nobody else will touch. The beast is gone. So why does Atsushi still feel it breathing somewhere behind him?
