Hinako can't stop thinking about the ocean. Years ago it swallowed her family, and ever since, she's been half in love with the idea of sinking down there with them. Her friend Miko is the only thing keeping her upright, and when Miko isn't around, Hinako quietly falls apart. Then one hot summer morning she spots a girl by the water with eyes so dark and deep they don't look human. She can't get the girl out of her head. Later, something monstrous drags her under. She wakes up on the shore next to the stranger from the pier, who has just torn her attacker apart and now admits she wants to eat Hinako too. Her name is Shiori. Next morning she walks into Hinako's classroom like any other transfer student. So Hinako smiles, because she has finally met something that might actually kill her. But Shiori says the timing isn't right yet, and until it is, she isn't going anywhere. She'll stay close. She'll keep every other monster away from what belongs to her. Hinako doesn't run. She doesn't tell anyone. Does she really want to die, or has she just found a reason to keep living?
