Kraft Lawrence makes his living hauling wheat between towns, saving every coin for one thing: a shop of his own. Then he lifts the canvas on his cart and finds a naked girl asleep in the grain. Wolf ears, a tail, and zero interest in his shouting. Her name is Holo. The villagers of Pasloe have left her offerings for centuries, calling her the goddess of the harvest, though she never claimed the title. Farming got better. The prayers got thinner. Now she is a story they tell children, and she wants out. She asks Lawrence to take her north, to Yoitsu, the home she left so long ago. She promises he will not lose by it. He is a merchant, so he thinks it over. Hard. What settles it is how fast she reads people, a skill worth more than any cargo. So they ride together, haggling in market squares, chasing deals and dodging the ones that bite back. Somewhere along those roads, between the contracts and the close calls, his plan starts to feel smaller than it used to. Can a man who only ever wanted a quiet shop keep his eyes on the counter once the road has someone else on it?
