Six months ago Hikaru Indou walked into the mountains and didn't come back. Then, a week later, he was there again, acting like nothing had happened. Yoshiki couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. So he asked. And the thing wearing his best friend's face stopped pretending, peeled back its skin, and showed him what it really was. Then it begged him to stay quiet. It didn't want to hurt him. That's the part nobody expects. The monster is gentle. It marvels at the summer heat and the taste of things and the slow boredom of a small village, like a kid seeing all of it for the first time. Yoshiki knows the memories are borrowed. He knows the smile isn't real. He keeps the secret anyway. Losing Hikaru once nearly broke him, and he won't do it twice. But something came down from those mountains, and it didn't come alone. People in the village start to disappear. Strange things happen at night. Yoshiki holds on tighter to the thing beside him, even as the truth gets harder to ignore. How long can you love a lie before it destroys everything around you?
