One suitcase. That's all Nanami has left after her father's debts get the family kicked out, and the man himself vanishes without a word. Wandering the streets with nowhere to go, she helps a stranger being pestered by a dog, and he offers her a place to stay in return. Sounds generous. Then she actually sees the place: a crumbling old shrine crawling with spirits. The shrine's guardian, a fox named Tomoe, is furious at the intrusion and refuses to serve a human. But the shrine's god isn't coming back, and Nanami is apparently his replacement, so she has no choice but to take the job. She tries to get Tomoe on her side and ends up bound to him by a contract instead, which means the two of them are stuck together as god and familiar whether either likes it or not. Trouble keeps piling up anyway. A youkai would love to eat her. A snake shows up wanting to marry her. And the worst part might be what Nanami starts feeling about her own hot-tempered familiar. So who's really in charge here: the new god, or the fox who never wanted one?
