Three middle schoolers in Asakusa: Kazuki, who hauls a box around everywhere he goes, his childhood friend Enta, and Tooi, a delinquent who barely shows up to class. Then they run into Keppi, a creature who claims to be the heir of the Kappa Kingdom, and he yanks a shirikodama out of each of them through a spot nobody wants to think about. Just like that, the boys are kappa. Except Keppi has lost his throne. The Otter Empire took it, and now his power is thin, and zombie kappa keep crawling out of the city, born from what people want most and refuse to say out loud. The only way to fight them is to connect: minds, bodies, and the secrets they'd rather swallow. Kazuki has to open up. Enta has to. Tooi, of all people, has to. Every battle costs them something they were hiding. Meanwhile two cops named Reo and Mabu are hanging around their police box, acting like they're on the job. They're not. What are they really after, and what happens when a secret comes out that the boys can't take back?
