Neku Sakuraba wakes up in a Shibuya that isn't quite Shibuya, a black pin in his hand, and suddenly the thoughts of every stranger on the street are pouring into his skull. Then his phone buzzes. Reach 104. Sixty minutes. Fail and you lose your face. The timer burns itself into his skin and won't come off. Monsters called Noise hunt the streets, and they can erase a person from existence like they were never there. While running from one, Neku meets Shiki, a girl who grabs his hand and asks for a pact. Fight together or die alone. She tells him what he is now: a Player in the Reaper's Game, seven days long, one mission each day, and the Reapers running it are watching every move he makes. Each day the missions get harder. Other Players show up, some helpful, some not. Stronger Noise come crawling out of the pavement. And the deeper Neku gets, the more it feels like the game itself is hiding something from him. Why was he picked? What does winning actually get him?
