A kid wakes up on a school bench with no name, no past, no clue. A girl shoves a rifle into his hands and says he is dead. Then she takes aim at another student and calls her an angel. That is how Yuzuru Otonashi meets Yuri Nakamura and the Afterlife Battlefront, a crew of teenagers who refuse to quietly fade. They died badly, they blame God for it, and this school between life and death is where they dig in their heels. Otonashi steps between the rifle and the girl. The angel is not an angel. She is Kanade Tachibana, student council president, and to prove he really is dead she turns her arm into a blade and runs it through his chest. He comes to in the infirmary, untouched, shirt soaked through with blood. So the war is real. Yuri wants him in it, fighting to take back whatever they can from a president who seems to be the enemy. But something does not sit right. Otonashi looks at Kanade and wonders what she is protecting, and whether the battle everyone here has signed up for is even the right one. He starts asking questions the others stopped asking a long time ago. What if the person they are shooting at is the only one who knows what this place is really for?
