Jiro can't see far without his glasses, and that alone kills any chance of him climbing into a cockpit. So he picks the next best thing. He leaves home for Tokyo to study aircraft design, chasing the blueprint of a plane that might outrun the wind, the same way his idol Caproni built his. He's barely off the train when the Great Kanto Earthquake tears the city apart in 1923. In the chaos he carries a maid to safety, a girl named Naoko. He doesn't know it yet, but that single rescue will echo through the next twenty years of his life. The years that follow hand him one blow after another. Japan slides into poverty and unrest, and Jiro keeps drawing anyway, traveling, learning, pushing toward the machine he was born to build. That machine turns out to be the Mitsubishi A6M Zero. He knows exactly what it will be used for. Still he sketches, still he refines, still he tells himself the dream is worth it. And then Naoko comes back into his life, and suddenly the sky is no longer the only thing pulling at him. How do you hold on to a person when your whole heart already belongs to something that might destroy everything?
