The Great War is over. Four years of blood, and the continent of Telesis picks itself up and starts over. In the middle of all that fighting was Violet Evergarden. A girl raised for one job: breaking enemy lines. Then the last skirmish takes her arms, and she wakes in a hospital with nothing but a few words from the person she loved most. Words she cannot understand. She has no home to go back to. Instead, she ends up at a postal company in the port city of Leiden, run by an old army commander. That is where she first sees an Auto Memory Doll at work: a girl who writes letters for people who cannot put their own feelings into words. Violet decides she wants to do the same. Her job now is to sit across from strangers and turn their tangled thoughts into letters. She writes for people she has never met, uncovering their love and regret while her own past stays out of reach. The major never came home. So what did he actually mean when he said those last words to her?
