He cut down enough men to earn a name whispered across all of Japan: the master assassin, the sword that brings death. Then he swore the blade would never taste blood again. So he walked. Farther and farther from the life he built, from the woman who stitched his clothes and waited at the gate, telling himself the past had to be paid for somewhere far away from her. He wanted atonement. He got distance instead. Kaoru still wakes before dawn. She walks to the harbor and stands there, watching the ships come in, scanning every face that steps off a gangway. Nobody is him. Back home, she starts turning things over in her mind: the years, the fights, the quiet meals, every small moment she thought would last. Memories are all that keep arriving. Kenshin keeps moving, and the space between them stretches wider with each mile he puts behind him. Somewhere out there he is still trying to outrun what he did. Somewhere back home she is running out of time to wait. He thinks leaving protects her. She would tell him it does the opposite, if he ever gave her the chance. When the ships finally stop coming and the harbor goes quiet, will the man who made peace for everyone else ever come home to the one person who never asked him to be anyone but himself?
